The geography is simple but worth understanding. Navarre Beach sits on Santa Rosa Island, across the causeway from Navarre proper on the mainland. The best way to enjoy your time here is to focus on beach days and water adventures in Navarre Beach, then cross the bridge for many of the area's local restaurants, coffee shops, stores, and everyday essentials.

Seasonal Weather & Travel Planning

Summer means hot days, warm Gulf water, and the biggest vacation crowds. September and October hit a nice middle ground: the water is still warm, families thin out after school restarts, and temperatures gradually lose their midsummer intensity.

Winter is much cooler and slower. Beach days depend on the weather, but restaurants are less hectic and long shoreline walks are even better this time of year.

Beach Etiquette, Safety & Turtle Rules

Always check the beach flag before swimming.

• Green indicates lower hazard.
• Yellow means moderate conditions.
• Red signals high hazard.
• Double red closes the water.
• Purple warns of dangerous marine life.

Sea turtle nesting season runs May through October. Fill holes in the sand, remove chairs and umbrellas each evening, take your trash with you, and keep artificial lights away from the beach after dark.

Getting to Navarre Proper

Staying on Navarre Beach doesn't mean you're limited to the island. Navarre proper sits just across the Navarre Beach Causeway on the mainland, where you'll find many of the area's restaurants, coffee shops, stores, markets, and everyday essentials.

Getting there is simple. Follow Gulf Boulevard north across the causeway, which connects directly with Navarre Parkway and Highway 98. Most places in Navarre proper are only a short drive from the beach, so crossing over for breakfast, groceries, dinner, or a rainy-day outing is no big expedition.

Local tip: Traffic around the causeway and Highway 98 gets heavier during peak summer periods, so allow a little extra time around popular arrival, departure, and dinner hours.

Beaches, Water Activities & Coastal Nature

Navarre Beach Fishing Pier

This is Navarre's most recognizable landmark. The iconic pier stretches 1,545 feet into the Gulf, holding the title of the longest fishing pier in Florida. Walk out for broad Gulf views and watch the water for dolphins, sea turtles, rays, and occasionally sharks.

Anglers have another reason to visit. Pompano, redfish, Spanish mackerel, cobia, and king mackerel are among the catches associated with the pier, and fishing equipment is available on site.

Pro tip: Go early. Sunrise from the pier is worth setting the alarm for.

Beach Access 33A

For a simpler beach day, head to Beach Access 33A. You lose the restaurants and activity around the pier, but gain a broad stretch of white sand with fewer distractions. Pack shade, drinks, snacks, and whatever else you need, as facilities are limited here.

Sound Side Park

The Gulf isn't your only swimming option. On the north side of Santa Rosa Island, Sound Side Park faces the calmer waters of Santa Rosa Sound. Shallower water and gentler conditions are great for families with younger children, new paddleboarders, and kayakers. Picnic areas and the Navarre Beach Multiuse Path are nearby.

Opal Beach

Opal Beach sits inside Gulf Islands National Seashore, surrounded by dunes, sea oats, Gulf water, and protected shoreline.

The main complex has parking, pavilions, outdoor showers, and public restrooms. It operates from 8 a.m. to sunset and requires an entrance fee. Bring supplies, since there are no concessions inside this section of the national seashore.

If you have time, keep driving. The roughly eight-mile coastal stretch connecting the Navarre Beach area toward Pensacola Beach is one of the prettiest drives around.

Navarre Family Watersports (NP)

Need something more energetic than lying on a towel? Navarre Family Watersports in Navarre proper is all about jet skis, pontoon boats, paddleboards, kayaks, and inflatable water activities. A highlight is the Wibit Waterpark, a floating obstacle course on Santa Rosa Sound with climbing sections, slides, and launch pads.

Extra tip: After dark, Glow Paddle offers night paddling excursions at Navarre Family Watersports, using clear kayaks or paddleboards fitted with underwater lights.

Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center

Inside Marine Park, the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center introduces you to the marine life sharing this stretch of Florida coastline. The star is Sweet Pea, a rescued green sea turtle who cannot return to the wild because of her injuries. Smaller exhibits explore turtles, rays, jellyfish, and other Gulf species.

Navarre Beach Marine Sanctuary Reefs

The artificial reefs around Navarre Beach Marine Park give you direct access to marine life without booking a boat. The Gulf reef sits roughly 340 feet offshore and now contains 78 structures. Two additional reef areas sit in the calmer waters of Santa Rosa Sound.

Confident swimmers should tackle the Gulf reef in good visibility and calm conditions. Families and beginners are better off starting on the sound side.

Navarre Beach Marine Science Station

The Navarre Beach Marine Science Station hosts programs focused on marine biology, water quality, coastal habitats, and conservation, with hands-on activities for younger visitors. Programming varies, so check what's scheduled during your stay.

Fresh local shrimp, grouper, and snapper take center stage at Navarre Beach's waterside raw bars and casual coastal spots.

• Windjammers on the Pier: Windjammers sits at the entrance to the fishing pier, with Gulf views, outdoor space, seafood, burgers, tacos, and cold drinks. Grouper, Gulf shrimp, and fish tacos are among the most popular orders here. There's live music throughout the week, too. 
  
  
• Juana's Pagodas & Sailors' Grill: Juana's is a restaurant, beach bar, volleyball hangout, music venue, and watersports base rolled into one. It sits beside Santa Rosa Sound near the causeway, which puts sunset front and center. Grab a mahi sandwich or ahi tuna nachos and pair it with something frozen. 
  
  
• Andy D's: This is a great local hangout for seafood baskets, burgers, shrimp tacos, pizza, drinks, and live music. 
  
  
• Beach House Social Bar & Grill: For dinner with a slightly dressier edge, Beach House Social Bar & Grill sits inside the SpringHill Suites directly on the Gulf. Seafood is the star of the menu, but they also serve delicious steaks, burgers, and cocktails. Make sure to grab a table on the balcony overlooking the water and time your visit for sunset. 
  
  
• Scooter's Fish House (NP): Scooter's is a casual local eatery where the shrimp tacos, grouper sandwiches, mahi, grits, and fried or grilled seafood baskets are unmissable. 
  
  
• Dewey Destin's Navarre (NP): At Dewey Destin's, you order at the counter and enjoy your meal at picnic tables beside Santa Rosa Sound. Look for Royal Red shrimp, smoked fish dip, blackened fish, and bacon-wrapped crab-stuffed shrimp. 
  
  
• Where Y'at Seafood Market & Restaurant (NP): For Louisiana flavor, head to Where Y'at Seafood Market & Restaurant. Crawfish, gumbo, po'boys, and jambalaya are all must-tries. There's also a seafood market, so you can pick up something fresh to cook back at your rental.

• The Slippery Mermaid (NP): Specialty sushi rolls are the draw here, alongside sashimi and poke. The Fiesta Mermaid and Raider Roll are two house favorites worth trying.
   
  
• Cactus Flower Cafe (NP): A California-style Mexican spot where must-tries include the enchiladas, fish tacos, burritos, and refreshing margaritas.
   
• Johnny Huston's Grille & Bar (NP): Johnny Huston's serves some of the best burgers in the area. Pair yours with hand-cut sweet potato fries and a cold draft beer, or go for the wings. TVs throughout the restaurant also attract a local crowd to catch a game.
   
• Bella Luna Italian Bistro (NP): Craving Italian food? Bella Luna has a great lineup of Italian classics such as lasagna, seafood fettuccine, chicken Parmesan, and garlic rolls.

• Tommy's Snowballs: Tommy's is a famous stop for shaved ice. They have dozens of flavors. Whatever you choose, ask for yours stuffed with vanilla ice cream. Bahama Mama and Tiger's Blood are among the popular flavor combinations.
   
• Navarre Bakery & Creamery (NP): Sweet goods are made from scratch, but the most popular pick is the cinnamon rolls. Their bagels, turnovers, donuts, and cake slices are also incredible, but they usually sell out fast. Go early.
   
• Shark Bite (NP): Breakfast burritos are the reason to drive to Shark Bite. They are packed with eggs, cheese, potatoes, and your choice of breakfast meat. Calling ahead is smart during busy summer mornings.

• Saltwater Cottage (NP): A good alternative to generic beach souvenirs. Browse coastal artwork, jewelry, home accessories, candles, books, and gifts with a stronger local connection.
   
• A Special Place (NP): This shop focuses on work from local makers and artists. You'll find jewelry, paintings, pottery, soaps, woodwork, and other small-batch pieces. 
  
  
• Pik-itz Art & Antiques (NP): More into vintage finds? Pik-itz Art & Antiques mixes furniture, coastal objects, old signs, original artwork, and assorted oddities.
  
  

Day Trips & Nearby Attractions

Navarre is well positioned for day trips across Northwest Florida. Keep these for a cloudy day, a break from the beach, or the point in the trip when everyone wants to get in the car and see something new.

Gulf Breeze Zoo

It covers roughly 50 acres and is home to hundreds of animals, with safari train rides and animal encounters among the family draws.

National Naval Aviation Museum

Make the trip west toward Pensacola for the National Naval Aviation Museum at NAS Pensacola. The museum explores more than a century of naval aviation through aircraft, exhibits, and military history. Admission is free, though you should check current NAS Pensacola access requirements when planning the trip. If your dates line up with a Blue Angels practice, even better.

Fort Pickens

Keep driving west along Santa Rosa Island and eventually you'll reach Fort Pickens, part of Gulf Islands National Seashore. The brick fort dates to the 1800s, with tunnels, fortifications, historic structures, beaches, and wildlife surrounding it. The drive itself is half the appeal, especially once development drops away.

Blackwater River State Park

For a completely different Florida landscape, drive north toward Blackwater River State Park. Longleaf pine forest replaces dunes and condos, and the dark, tannin-stained river is the main attraction. Kayaking, canoeing, hiking, swimming, and riverside picnics are favorite ways to spend the day here.

Historic Milton

Pair Blackwater with Historic Milton, the Santa Rosa County seat. The town is full of local history, riverfront walks, the West Florida Railroad Museum, and access to the Blackwater Heritage State Trail. It's a nice counterpoint to the beach towns along the coast.
